Sterling Opera House

It looks as if there is serious interest from an outside organization in the old Sterling Opera House. You can read about it in the Valley Gazette’s on-line edition atÂ

I know we have heard this type of thing in the past, but lets try to get past that and talk for a minute about what that might mean for Derby, and / or the Valley, whether you think it could be viable (and if so how) and finally would you support it via your patronage?

The Opera House has a great deal of potential for downtown. Our City government is doing the right thing by carefully exploring the possibility of fund the Opera House renovations and reconstruction through private or privately raised funds.
The Opera House will work if it is done right. Derby has been trying since at least 1967 to do something with the building. So no stone should remain unturned.

I’m not sure how viable it would be, but I’d support it. My wife and I like to do dinner and then take in a musical at the Goodspeed Opera House usually once a year or so. We don’t go as often as we’d like to because of the cost and travel distance. This being closer would certainly help with that.
I’m not sure if the parking in the area could support a vibrant theatre business. I would assume it would provide increased business for restaurants in the area and maybe even spawn a couple new ones.
Overall I think it could be a nice addition to the downtown as long as it doesn’t require any additional local taxdollars being shelled out.
